Overview

The original La Catedral stood from 1913 until the new San Mames rose on the same street corner, opening in stages from 2013. Athletic, fielding only Basque players, draws a crowd identity no other club matches. The new arena is among the loudest in Spain, its south end nearly vertical. The old ground hosted the 1982 World Cup, including England against France, and the new bowl stages regular European nights.
