Stamford Bridge
Opened 1877 as an athletics ground, home of Chelsea FC since 1905
Overview
The London Athletics Club opened the ground in 1877, and in 1905 Gus Mears founded Chelsea to occupy the venue after plans to sell it fell through. The Shed End became one of the famous terraces of English football. Redevelopment plans for a 60,000 seat rebuild stalled for years over land disputes. Capacity today is about 40,000, snug in a tight west London block.
