Built with money raised by Vasco supporters, Sao Januario was the largest stadium in Brazil when it opened and remains a landmark of Rio de Janeiro. President Getulio Vargas used it for major public speeches in the 1930s and 1940s. Its neo colonial facade remains a city landmark, and its stands hold about 22,000.
